CUTTING MY 4C HAIR : THE BIG CHOP + HOW I FEEL ABOUT IT NOW.

black woman with cut hair-Igboafricana

I can’t believe it’s been months since my last blog especially since there has been so much to write about, however, I’m back and hope to return to the good old days of sharing experiences and bedtime stories with you here.
Some of you may or may not know but a few days before my twenty-fifth birthday, I cut my pretty lengthy, healthy natural hair. Through the days that led to me to my barber’s chair ( That’s right I have a barber now!), I spent hours online searching for content to give me the confidence to do it.
so, I’d like to think of this post as the thing i needed but now for you.
Before I share any more with you, I’d like to mention that if by the end of this post you still find yourself strongly unsure about cutting your hair, then you probably shouldn’t.

THE DECISION

I noticed a lot of people that saw me right after my big chop assumed this was a decision that I spent months or if not years sitting on, however, the thought of cutting my hair came roughly about a month before I went through with it. I’d been braiding my hair one day and after sitting down for what seemed like the entire day, I muttered to myself “ I’m tired of this of this”
It was about 9:30 pm when my braider who arrived at noon that day set my hair in hot water, and at that moment, mentioned my decision to her as a way of giving her a heads up that her services would not be required for an extended period.

SELF-CONSCIOUSNESS

Getting the big chop can be such a drastic change that it makes sense to feel a bit self-conscious about it. I remember looking up several pictures on Pinterest for inspiration on how I was going to style my hair after, I also recall reading a few other blogs about the different shape faces and how some aren’t suitable for the chop which I found utterly unhelpful, especially since I needed convincing. However, I have awesome friends who reminded me I was a bad bih either way.

REASONS TO GET THE BIG CHOP

 Like me, some of us need to give ourselves more than a single reason to get the big chop, even though looking different and being a bit more daring is reason enough. So in case you find yourself looking for more reasons,  you can piggyback on a few of mine;

  • Cutting the cost of haircare ( From haircare products to the costs of Natural hair salons in Lagos, your Bank account will smile a bit more.)
  • Taking a break from styling my hair ( Who are we kidding, managing 4C hair can be tasking so the big chop might just the break you need.)
  • Growing healthier hair; my hair was healthy for most parts ( I took less care once I decided to get a cut) but this is a very good reason to go ahead with the chop.

GETTING IT DONE

Once you decide to get a chop, there's another major decision revolving around whether to do it yourself or get it done at a salon. I think how low you decide to go should determine this. If you’re looking at a low fro, then you can do it yourself ( please watch youtube videos!) but if you’re looking at a much lower cut like mine, I recommended going to a natural hair salon that cuts women’s hair.

I had mine done at Makeme salon on Bode Thomas at Surulere for N3000, dying it however cost an extra N10,000.
Funny story, I reached out to another salon in victoria island here in Lagos which I would not name, but it’s quite popular and is owned and ran by a white man. They cost the cut and dying at N50,000, and he insisted they would need to texturize my hair as well, *Laughs in SAPA*

HOW I FEEL ABOUT IT NOW + CONCLUSION

Another interesting reaction I got to my haircut was the people asking “ why I did it despite being into the team natural hair movement”. I would like to use this opportunity to re-echo that short hair isn't any less natural or beautiful than long hair, and in the same way I shared my journey then, I’d do the same now but this time for my short sisters!
As to how I feel, honestly, I love it! I haven’t given any thought to whether or not I’m going to grow my hair out or keep it low but for now, I’m enjoying my new look and hope you get to enjoy yours too!

Thank you for reading, remember sharing is caring!
