FASHION TRENDS: HOW TO STYLE NOLLYWOOD Y2K FASHION LOOKS
You know that saying about if you love something, let it go, and if it loves you, it'ss always find it's way back to you? well 365 days later, I find myself writing about fashion once again.
Thank God for the new Y2K trend which appears to be picking up, and gradually has become a party theme favourite among Nigerians both in the country and in the diaspora.
I'll start off by saying how much I've always wanted to throw a Nollybabe Y2K inspired party for my birthday, but since my office end of the year party sort of beat me to it.

Anyways, one thing I picked up during the days leading up to the party was how little people knew how to style themselves for it, as a matter of fact, it took me aback because what have you been watching during your formative years??! I still watch most old nollywood movies on youtube, here's my favourite channel that keeps me plugged. So during this week, as I found myself being a stylist and personal shopper, I compiled ways to hack styling in the old nollywood trend, in five simple steps.
PICK A REFERENCE
Like the style icons we love and occasionally copy today like Rihanna, Nollybabes were fashion icons, from Regina Asikia to early days Genevive. Of course for the guys we had icons like Jim Iyke and Hank Anuku. So the first step in getting prepared for whatever you might be styling in Y2K fashion for, it's important to find a reference. It's so easy to be all over the place with this trend, so pick a reference and let their fashion guide your choices.
DON'T TREAT IT AS A COSTUME
One of the things that irks me about the misses on this trend, is how people treat it as a costume rather than a styling choice, because belive it or not, a lot of the what we wear today is heavily influenced by the outfits of that time. so before you go on a shopping spree to pick out clothes to makeup your nollywood "costume" go through your wardrobe, keeping your reference in mind, and pick out pieces that align with the fashion from that time. Your outfit must not comprise of outragous wigs, unreasonable cutouts and knee high boots.
ACCESSORIZE LIKE A BOSS
Looking at the men and women of that time, accessories where a huge part of their outfits. Whether it's Exergerrated hoop earrings, to blinged out neck pieces ties the nollywood style together. Some accessories you can play with are, mini bags, bandaners, bucket hats, vintage glasses, blings, fishnets, and chokers. Resist the urge to do too much, I repeat, resist the urge to do TOO MUCH! remember, these people dressed like most people did at that time.

Let's face it, the people of that time loved their labels, and for some reason one particular brand was pretty recurring, I'm sure if inflation wasn't a thing we would all be able to get one for ourselves *winks* So if you can, rock a known label piece, if not just carry on with what you have on ground.
CATCH THE VIBE
To really get into the Y2K look, you have a responsibility to own the persona, for example if your reference was Jim Iyke, watch a movie scene with him to help you get in character. You might be wondering what exactly this has to do with your outfit, but like i said, these clothes are not as far from some trends we know today, so getting is a good way to make your outfit belivabe and honestly, its bare fun.
