Bull horns, Painted bodies, forest shots, and Aso Oke weavers???

These are not the visual elements people were expecting from the music video of Adekunle Gold's hit song featuring Zinoleesky, "Party no dey Stop."

These days, Nigerian music videos seem to be falling into this rabbit hole of warped Western creativity I call the Illuminati aesthetic.

I call it that because most of the videos with these aesthetics from the days of Lady Gaga to Rihanna, and now Beyonce, have a common representation of what conspiracy theorists have a field day with likening to occultic practices.

In fact, some people have theories around this being a sign of the Illuminati's penetration into the Nigerian market. These conspiracies became more common since the release of Fireboy and Asake's music video for Bandana

In that video, there are scenes where Asake enters a church and while he's in the church in the background there are people with thongs of fire on their heads, but as he leaves the church he's followed by a herd of black goats, a scene people struggle to see how it relates what is being sung.

But back to the issues I decided to write this article to discuss, more than ever, especially in the Nigerian music community, it's beginning to appear as though there's a definition of what creativity looks like and everyone just runs with it. I personally see it as the reboxing of Nigerian creativity.

One of my favorite definitions of creativity is the ability of human beings to use imagination or original ideas to create something, so if you think about it, if every music video or piece of art begins to look alike and have the same imagery then it's safe to say creativity is lacking.

A number of these songs don't sound the same, and neither do they have the same context and lyrical scenarios so the videos having similar representation makes you wonder whether we're losing the creative sauce ta Western translation of African creativity. A few people have made the argument that its artists make Grammy-styled music videos, and while this is a very valid opinion, I would hate to accept this as the absolute reason because this has its own subtle meaning on what would influence the creativity of Nigerians in the future.

Creative expression has been and will always be a good thing, but it's assumed the endgame is to create an experience and in the case of a music video, elevate the overall experience of a song.

For example, this song clearly was crafted to be a party jam, and here are some of the lyrics to back it up;

The same can be said about Tiwa Savage's Stamina video, which some people have likened to a knockoff of Beyonce's brown skin girl video. Even weirder was the fact this music video has a child in it, meanwhile these are the lyrics that have sexual innuendos.

So while we're exploring more creatively, I would hate for us to fall into a creative box, that rather than improving the experience of a song creatively just seems weird.

For the past couple of months if not years, there has been a looming fear about whether or not AI would be the death of creativity especially in Africa. As a writer and transmedia artist, I must confess that I was worried too, not only was my fear based on the fact that artificial intelligence was going to steal my means of livelihood, but it also stemmed from a place of creativity as a whole becoming mundane.

Shortly after the launch of ChatGPT in November 2022, we've seen the rise of several AI bots incorporated into several creative tools and software. Most recently, one of the favorite on-the-go design tools, Canva launched its creative assistant during their just-concluded Canva Create event and has been marketed to ensure that designers never have to start on a blank page again. You simply describe the kind of design you want in detail, kind of like you would in a brief, and the AI does the magic, after which you can go ahead and make tweaks where you see fit.

Copy AI is another common tool, launched for copywriters, it's pretty similar to Quillbot, however, it does offer a wider range of copies from Ads, emails, and the entire nine yards.

My first experimentation with AI really started on Copy AI, as a writer, this would be my first competition anyways, so I decided to kickstart my analysis here. I used copy ai, on and off for three weeks before I ran out of words ( You have a monthly words limit in the free version). This was when I gave the infamous chatGPT a go.

My boss had mentioned it to me a couple of times, in her opinion, not every piece of writing needed to be done professionally when we could just push it to AI to get the job done. So one evening when I was looking at eight hours worth of writing that I had to do, I felt this was the best time to try the software out.

It's been a total of three weeks since I decided to give AI and try, making me feel a lot more confident to write about what I really think AI would do to creativity and creative people in general.

To Creativity

Albert Einstein once said that the true sign of intelligence is not knowledge, but imagination. A lot of this software runs solely based on knowledge because unlike humans they are incapable of imagination and it shows. To put it simply like a Twitter user said, AI is simply not creative.

I remember writing an email for Igboafricana and putting it in chatGPT to edit, I couldn't help but laugh at how despite being now void of any grammatical errors, it lacked personality.

when the generated results were complete I said to myself, I don't sound like this, and people who read what I write know this and would not read this.
So that instantly discredited any assertion to be on AI's ability to make creatives less significant. Several people read from authors they like not only because they tell a compelling story, but the sauce is in how they tell it. The same goes for artists, musicians, designers, animators, etc.

That creative sauce is a seasoning that transcends beyond the rules of the art, however, AI can and I believe will fix the problem of roadblocks, because sometimes all people need is a little guidance to make magic.

To Creatives

My take on the future of the creative industry since the emergence of AI is solely opinionated. I really feel like this will push us more creatively, and save us a little time while doing it since cutting the time used in ideation by a significant percentage might be a thing. Also on whether it might make creatives lazier, I strongly doubt it.

If as a person or business, you rely solely on AI in your creative process it would show simply because AI is repetitive, which is bound to happen where there's a lack of imagination and personality.

So if you were like me once angry and scared about the rise of AI, don't be, the creation rules can be taught to machines, but your sauce can not.

Dear Worrier, If you’re reading this, I’m guessing you were having one of those moments when you couldn’t get a thought or idea that is not within your control out of your mind, then figured you’d come to the internet looking for answers on how to kick out that obnoxious feeling and move on ASAP, which is why you happened to find yourself on my website.

FYI this blog is going to be seasoned with bible texts, short stories, and half-truths. So if you're into that kind of thing then stay for the tea. I’ve read and spoken to enough people who know that I worry too much, and while every time I tell myself I would take every bit of advice and notes that I've come across to move past it, I just happen to give myself something new and improved to worry about.

In the last couple of months, I had spent every waking moment worrying about driving around Lagos, and while most people may never notice, trust me it’s there. I just happen to cling to these wise words “Fake it till you make it” to push through on most days.

Yes, before we get into some texts that have helped me push through, I don't think it would be fair to not mention how being a little fake plays a role in how I navigate moments of anxiety. I think the funniest part of my writing this is I’m currently anxious about something, and I said a prayer under my breath asking the holy spirit to guide me on what I should do, and you guys the word that came to me was “nothing” I’m not a nothing-doer, so you can imagine my struggle!

While I tried to battle this with passages like I can do all things through Christ that strengthens me, he hit me back with a “Which includes nothing”

So recently, I can be anxious and also sit in the comfort of doing nothing because taking action nowadays doesn’t seem to do much for me.

At this point, I’m currently worrying if this has in any way been of help to you because honestly there's a possibility perhaps I’m writing this is to make myself feel better about my feelings, kind of like a journal but you get access because misery loves it's share of company.

You might be thinking “this fraud made me open her website with a promise to show me how to not worry, and now she’s talking about how the holy spirit, misery, and nothingness.”

It gets deeper I promise, and to prove it, i'll kick of with one of my favourite parts of the bible to read when I get overwhelmed with fear. In Philippians 4:6-7 NIV the bible says “Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the Peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.”

The thing about the message is my anxieties aren’t exactly cured by this instant command to not be anxious, rather I've found comfort in the follow up that says; “in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God.”

I remember when I started driving to work, and every day at 3:00 pm I start getting shaky because it was about to be another long daunting drive back to the mainland in Lagos, from my office on the Island.

Some days I would enter the toilet just before I leave and begin to listen to every Christian podcast under that speaks to anxiety, at one point those 5-6 minutes affirming videos on youtube by Pastor Steven Furick of Elevation church became my crutch. While on most days the relief was temporary, It was effective enough to get me into the car and back on the road.

At the time I never drove above 60MPH and would get jumpy when tailgaters honked at me. It got slightly tiring that I would take driving breaks and leave my car that I spent an entire year praying for at home.

One day I said one of my silent prayers while gripping the steering, “God I commit the navigation of this vehicle to you, please help me get home in peace” I will never forget one of the few things I felt in my heart, was I would get better over time, and even then he will be with me, but I need to keep driving.

The wicked thing about worrying is that it doesn't chose an aspect of your life to camp, it usually affects all, from Love, money, career, you name it.

I would love to give you more practical examples of what these have looked like in my life, but I’d rather not spill. I will tell you this, arming yourself scripture for every situation will help, somedays it will stop heart beating faster than usually, and some days it wouldn't but it will get you to move. It kind of upgrades your anxiety to a “worried but not paralyzed” phase.

Finally, Sharpening your trust in God is the final way to purge your worries when they begin to get consuming, you can call it the endgame. I never worry about things within my control because at the crux of things, I trust myself. So if only there was someone who had control of everything past, present, and future we could trust.

Random question; Do you trust God’s plan for you is better than anything you can cook up ?

Sit in that thought and use it to challenge worrying thoughts from time to time.

To end my letter, I’d say this; if at any point you feel that overwhelming sense of worry, know you’re not alone, and while you may not have the answers you want or the things you need that are causing you to feel that way, you have God and trust me, he’s enough.
